Lara Knutson is an Artist, Industrial Designer, and Architect who lives and works in New York. She received a master’s degree in industrial design and a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute. She believes her work is informed by the interplay of light, space, materials, and structure that unite these two disciplines.
Lara Knutson uses reflective glass materials in most of her work, focused on the various light effects when light hits these materials.
Knutson was among the Artists featured in the exhibit "40 Under 40: Craft Futures" at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and one of her pieces was acquired by the museum. Lara’s Soft Glass series is in the permanent collections of the Corning Museum of Glass and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Knutson’s work portrays the present and the future, created by light and shadow. The absence of representational forms and dynamic abstraction allows viewers to focus solely on the light energy emanating from the artwork. Via her sculptures and Soft Chemistry Vases, Knutson encourages the viewer to walk around to explore and investigate the light reflections through movement.
